IBM Director comes free with every IBM xSeries Server.
At its core it is a systems monitoring server that recieves events
from the hardware and acts upon these events. Several add-on modules
are also available that extend the capabilites.
IBM servers have advanced monitoring chips that
can monitor everything from tempreture of CPU, memory modules
and can even predict failures before they occur. However, all
this hardware is a wasted investment for your company unless Director
is installed and configured to act upon these notifications.
Upon recieving events, Director can be configured
to:
- Notify
by email
- Notify by pager
- Execute a program
- Perform a reboot
The benefits are endless, for example
- If a service stops, restart it
- If a key press occurs out of hours, activate
your IP cameras
- If a Predcitve Failure Alert is recieved,
notify administrator who can order the part or swap safely at
an appropriate time to manage downtime
