VMware Partner Exchange 2010 – Edinburgh

Interesting event at the Marriot Dalmahoy today with VMware.

Turns out, as usual, we did need stinkin badges

Thought the technical sessions weren’t particularly technical but then again why go into detail too much when you are trying to convery a load of new messages to an audience comprised mainly of infrastructure/consolidation junkies and consultants on same topic.  I’m not slighting my peers here – really I’m not.  There are some guys out there currently I’d recommend before ourselves for certain types of VM work – it’s more a horses for courses argument I’m making.

However, from the looking around I did it seemed clear to me that VMware’s arrival into the big league of software companies and their highly acquisitive recent period herald a new age for the business and for many in the room – to my mind at least – they weren’t used to buying what VMware now appears to be selling.

Perhaps I’m wrong, SWMBO insists that is the case with at least an hourly frequency. but VMware is changing and has changed and IS Changing into a different monster.  Looks like it will be an interesting monster with whom to partner but I personally fell many of the traditional partner set may be Turkeys voting for Xmas.

tcServer and Hyperic look like competitors to elements respectively of the WebSphere and Tivoli stacks if you reside in IBM-land.  If I were IBM I’d be paying attention.  If I were VMware I’d understand my tools have come a long way but may still have miles to go before they sleep.  The core propostion at VMware is getting better and better.  But a word to the wise…some of these bolt ons that have been and will be acquired will not fit the rest of the stack – take it from an IBM Business Partner – some acquistions just never end up fitting.  The skill in being a partner to an acquisitive monster is having the inside track to know what no worky… because what no worky will never make it to marketing.

Still, must play nice.   For now it looks like the new strategy and *journey* over at VM-ville is on track and is going to be very, very disruptive…

Seems that old Chinese wish/curse/blessing has been granted already; We are indeed living in interesting times.
